Best Season to Travel

The best exodus time to travel the Upper Mustang region is from March to November. Although we can be taken this trip in the winter season, the temperature is strongly cold and might not be suitable for all travelers.

Weather

We have tried to short describe the weather, temperature, and climate of the Upper Mustang which is very important before visiting here.

  1. Spring season (March/April/May): This is one of the best seasons to trek in all of Nepal with the Upper Mustang. The temperature of days is approximately 15 to 21 °C. The temperature is neither too cold nor too hot for a hike. During the night temperature can drop from -7 to -1 °C. The spring season experiences you with a unique Tibetan culture, miraculous landscape, and archeology alongside the topography of Mustang.
  2. Summer season (June/July/August): Generally the months of summer are warm. The days and nights are warmer than due to the year. The temperature of the day is about from 18 to 28 °C and during the nighttime, it has gone from -2 to 0 °C. This season is wet all over Nepal but Upper Mustang is quite different where travelers experience no rainfall and an arid landscape. The land is positioned in the rain-shadow area of the Annapurna region. You can travel to Upper Mustang this season.
  3. Autumn season (September/October/November): The season is also best for trekking and tours in Nepal Himalaya. The month of autumn provides you with incredible sights of the Upper Mustang from everywhere. This season's temperature of the day starts from 12 to 20 °C and during the nights colder temperatures can down to -7 to -2 °C. Thus, make sure that you have good windproof equipment for these months.
  4. Winter season (December/January/February): Days temperature is around 0 to 5 °C and it goes down to -25 to -20 °C during the night in Upper Mustang. These months experience too much snowfall and local people descent to lower regions. During these months, Trekking and any trip to Upper Mustang can be challenging to start for trekkers. If you are adventure lovers and want to travel in the winter season experience freezing weather, occasional snowfall, fewer crowds, and majestic views of the Mustang. Please put on some warm and windproof clothing to keep your body warm before sunrise and after sunset in the mountain.

Permits and Fees 

The Upper Mustang is a restricted region of Nepal where foreign travelers should obtain a special entry permit to visit here. The department of immigration issues permits for foreign tourists. Single permits are not allowed, issued only to a group which means you have at least two visitors in a group. If you are sole tourists, let us know, and we will arrange permits by joining you with the next visitor's group.

We need your four passport-size photographs and original with a valid passport to obtain the restricted region permits. Upper Mustang permit costs US $500 per tourist for 10 days. It is one and only one for 10 days, not night. An additional day will be charged US $50 per day. The journey begins and ends from Kagbeni where your permits will be checked by ACAP and police.

Day 01Your arrival in Kathmandu (1400m)Your arrival at Tribhuwan International airport in Kathmandu. Our company’s (Nepal Glacier Treks & Expedition) airport representative meet you who is displaying your/s name on the board. Your welcome and transfer to the hotel by our private vehicle. Day 02Trip preparation and Kathmandu valley exploration tourPre-trip meeting with tours/ treks experts at the hotel and begins sightseeing tour around Kathmandu valley. Especially visit UNESCO world heritage sites are very famous for culture, history, and arts. Experience Pashupatinath, Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath, Patan Durbar square with private vehicle and professional guide. Overnight at the same hotel in Kathmandu. Day 03Kathmandu to Pokhara by flight (815m)You will fly to Pokhara from Kathmandu. It takes around 35 minutes and gets the chance to see stunning Ariel mountain views throughout the flight. After landing Pokhara airport, you transfer to the hotel and sightseeing program. Sightseeing highlights: visit Mahendra and Bat Cave, International Mountain Museum, boating at Fewa Lake, Devi’s Fall and Peace Pagoda Stupa. Overnight at hotel in Pokhara. Day 04Drive to Tatopani (2600m) via Beni bazaar by 4WD JeepDrive from Pokhara to Tatopani via Beni bazaar is headquarter of Myagdi district. Driving will be 5 to 6 hours, passes snaking roads of high hills through a small market, village, rivers and rice fields on the way. The off-road trip stars from Beni through a bank of Kaligandaki River. Accommodation: 4WD Land Cruiser and BLD on the guesthouse

Day 05Drive Tatopani to Kagbeni (2900m) by 4WD JeepThe journey starts to Kagbeni through a bank of Kaligandaki River and Kaligandaki canyon (world deepest gorge). Driving would be 5/ 6 hours, passes Jomsom local town then you will heads to a popular holy temple of Muktinath area where you can see the 108 spout water taps, Buddhist monastery, natural fire (lighting itself), stunning Himalaya’s views of Tukuche peak, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Tibetan traditional activities. Day 06Drive to Ghami Village (3530m)Drive: 6 hours Before departing to Ghami Village, document procedures of special entrance permit to Upper Mustang. After exploring Buddhist school and monastery of Kagbeni, you will drive through ancient Buddhist Stupas, the old stunning village of Chuksung, Chella, Samar, Syangboche, Bhina, and Ghiling. The day will more exciting to see local traditional houses with Yak caravan, splendid Landscape, Tibetan Buddhist culture, and local daily lifestyles. Day 07Drive to Lo- Manthang (3840m)Drive: 3 to 4 hours The journey onward with incredible sightseeing and local activities. Day 10Drive from Chhuksang village to KalopaniDrive: 4/ 5 hours

Day 11Drive Kalopani to PokharaDrive: 5/ 6 hours
Drive back to Pokhara from Kalopani via Kaligandaki River and Kaligandaki George, Beni bazaar, small village through winding off-road of high hills. You can see the small market, village, lush forests and rivers on the way.

Day 12Fly/ drive from Pokhara to KathmanduPokhara to Kathmandu flight 35 minutes with stunning mountain flight. Driving will be 6 hours through the Prithvi highway by private transport. The remaining time for shopping, rest at the hotel depends on you.

Day 13Final departureThis is a sign of the end your trip of Upper Mustang. Our Nepal Glacier Treks and Expedition airport’s representative will drop you at Tribhuvan International airport by private vehicle.
